Is the Sprint HTC Evo 4g phone able to hook up to your home internet for free?

..I'm looking into getting the HTC Evo, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to be able to hook it up to my internet or if I'm gonna have to purchase monthly internet for it. Please help, thanks.

There are two different methods for an EVO to provide Internet support at home. The first is on an one on one basis (EVO to PC) and the second is as a wireless access point (called Hot Spot). In the case of Sprint, there is a monthly charge for both / either of these features.

The EVO Hot Spot / Wireless Router Support is much cheaper, though, than getting a 3G/4G router from Sprint. The EVO support is $ 30/month for unlimited 4G and 3G. When you go the actual router method Sprint charges you $ 60/month for unlimited 4G but you only get 5GB in 3G mode. The killer is the router will switch between the two automatically. If you're not careful you can end up with extra charges at the end of the month.

BUT! Android provides the software and the support as part of the Android 2.2 operating system. There are ways to by-pass the simple block Sprint placed into the EVO for both of them.

In the case of the one on one (called tethering) the application allowing this is in the Android Market Place provided by Sprint. It works and states it is free for both the application and to run on Sprint. One wonders why Sprint provides it (for free) and also charges in another area for the same function. Guess the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing at Sprint.

As for the Hot Spot, my knowledge comes from before 2.2 where you'd need to root the phone. With 2.2 you no longer need to root the phone to get access to Hot Spot support. As I've read it, there are now applications again supplied for free by Sprint via the Android Market that enable Hot Spot. I have yet to try them, so I can't go into how well they work.
