I have a new HTC Fuze and first installed a 4gb micro sd card that works fine. I bought a 8gb micro sd hc card and it will not work...Why?

phones have a maximum size card that they can accept. i would read the manual, 4 gb may be the largest size it accepts.

That's strange. The Fuze supports SDHC cards up to 32gb. You might want to try the card in other devices and possibly get a refund for it.
You MicroSD card slot might also be broken. That happened with my TyTN
