My friend is giving me his verizon htc touch pro 2...Slight problem, i have AT&T. I was searching for anything that could get my the unlock code for this phone. But every option has something to do with a payment...that is something that i want to avoid

Does that device have a place for a SIM card? Verizon is a CDMA network that does not use SIM cards but I know they have a couple of devices that are a dual purpose device and works on both. I don't know if that one does though. If it does then you will need to contact verizon for the unlock code.
All SIM unlock codes are tied to the particular device IMEI and are carrier specific. The request for that code would need to be made from the carrier that the phone was originally manufactured for. Each carrier has their own guidelines as far as what requirements have to be met before that code will be given out. This is a free process in the US.

Yes HTC Touch Pro2 supports supports both sim and CDMA technology, So you can unlock your GSM part and use it with AT&T network.
as far as I know free codes does not unlock your phone, so even if you would find a unlock code or whatever you'd have to spend some money.
